During the Yuan (1271-1368) and Ming (1368-1644) Dynasties, an official kiln was opened here to make glazed tiles for the imperial palace, hence the name “Liulichang” (In Chinese, liuli refers to colored glaze and chang means factory).

In the early Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), antique dealers began to sell curios and ancient books here. In the Qianlong period (1736-1796) of the Qing Dynasty, Liulichang has become a collection and distribution center for antiques, calligraphy works and paintings, ancient books, and inscriptions, and the four treasures of the study. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, it is more abundant with the cultural atmosphere.

Since the 1980s, the Liulichang Cultural Street has undergone several renovations, leaving this famous ancient cultural street a new look.

Studio of Glorious Treasures (Rong Bao Zhai) is the most famous and the oldest shop in the Liulichang Cultural Street. It is developed from “Songzhu Studio”, which was founded in 1672. And in the 20th year(1894) of Guangxu, it was renamed “Studio of Glorious Treasures”. The Number One Scholar (Zhuangyuan, a title conferred on the one who came first in the highest imperial examination) Lu Runxiang wrote the name “Studio of Glorious Treasures” for the shop.

The business scope of Studio of Glorious Treasures is very wide, from the four treasures of the study to albums of paintings, from calligraphy works, paintings, and seal carving to framed picture scrolls, covering almost everything.
