Overview of Baishui Village

Baishui Village,Baishui Village
Baishui Village

Baishui Village, located in the northern mountainous area of Zengcheng District of Guangzhou, has a subtropical monsoon climate. Due to its high mountains, dense forests, and abundant rain, Baishui Village has developed as a natural oxygen bar with a rather high 112.5 thousand negative air ion per cubic centimeter. The annual rainfall of this area is about 2,200 milliliters, which has created the natural wonders of thousands of springs and waterfalls.

Baishui Village, a mountain-type scenic spot, enjoys high mountains and tall peaks, with nine peaks above 1,000 meters. There are many fantastic peaks and bizarre caves formed by the "spheroidal weathering" of granite on the top of the mountain, which are rare in the granite landforms of southern China.

Baishui Village features rare natural ecological resources such as virgin forests, shoals, wetlands, canyons, and lakes in Guangdong, with many second-grade and third-grade plants and animals under state protection around this area. There are seven species of wild plants under special state protection and eight species of rare and endangered plants. As a national 4A grade scenic spot, Baishui Village is honored as “the Magnificent Emerald on the Tropic of Cancer”, attracting thousands of tourists every year.

The name of the theme stemmed from the image of Tai Chi constituted by the fantastic waterfall and huge rocks covered by the waterfall. Visitors did not only experience the pure natural and original ecological landscape here but also enjoyed the jollification of the Chinese New Year.

From July 13th to August 25th, 2013, Baishui Village held the first fun parents-child activity of "Enjoy a Happy Summer Vacation Accompanied by Yellow Ducks". Tourists cruised in the yellow duck yachts that appeared as the image of a family of three, watched a thousand little yellow duck parade, and enjoyed an idyllic picnic.

Baishui Fairy Waterfall

As the largest waterfall in China’s mainland, the Baishui Fairy Waterfall drops 428.5 meters from the top of an 828-meter high mountain, as if a beautiful fairy, wearing a fluttering dress and holding a white lotus flower, stands in the wind. According to the legend, it was the incarnation of He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals (八仙) in Chinese mythology. Some local inhabitants said that when He Xiangu became an immortal, she transformed herself into a waterfall, which was finally named Baishui Fairy Waterfall.

Flowing Water

Due to its abundance of water, hydroelectric power stations were built here in the early 1980s, and water flowed down for power generation. Since then, the spectacular natural landscape is difficult to see, only when there is a lot of water in the rainy season.

Fortunately, this situation was discovered by a photography enthusiast in Zengcheng in the mid-1990s. She suggested to the government that the spectacle of the waterfall should be restored. Then in 2005, the government of Zengcheng established the Baishui Village Scenic Area and stopped pumping water to generate electricity, allowing the Baishui Village Waterfall to “reappear” in the world, and then the waterfall has gradually become the current fantastic Baishui Fairy Waterfall.

According to the local legend, He Xiangu, whose real name was He Xiugu, was born on the seventh day of the third lunar month in a year in the Tang Dynasty. She was the daughter of He Tai, who made tofu for a living in Xingui Township, Xiaolu District, Zengcheng County, Guangzhou City. She was very clever. When she was 14 years old, she met Lv Dongbin, also one of the Eight Immortals in Chinese mythology. Lv Dongbin gave her some mica to eat. And then she could foresee the future. Later, she started to visit the immortals in the mountains. Finally, she also became one of the Eight Immortals. The locals believe that the Baishui Fairy Waterfall is the incarnation of He Xiangu.

The best time to travel to Baishui Village is between September and December. At that time, the weather is cool, and the good weather lasts until November and December, making it most suitable for tourists.

However, it is better to avoid going there on holidays, especially during National Day holidays (usually between October 1 to 7) or International Workers’ Day holiday (usually between May 1 to 5), because there is a lot of traffic during holidays and some areas in the scenic area will be crowded. When the visitor flow is large, they are only allowed to go up instead of going down.
