Seafood

Sanya First Market is a famous seafood trading market. However, the market mentioned nowadays not only refers to this seafood bazaar but more broadly includes its surrounding commercial streets. The streets of the market develop a tic-tac-toe structure with Xinjian Street and Heping Street stretching in the east-west direction, and Hongqi Street and Xinmin Street in the north-south direction.

Specialty products, handicrafts, and dried seafood are provided on Xinjian Street. Hongqi Street totals more than 300 meters long. Its northern section is mainly engaged in the wholesale of Hainan local products and daily necessities, while clothing specialty stores and brand shops gather in the southern section.

Most of the seafood processing shops in the market are concentrated on Xinmin Street, with more than 70 seafood processing shops lined up on both sides and in a unified decoration style. In addition to seafood, many Hainan snacks can be tasted here.

History of Sanya First Market

The market is a state-owned market, which is under the supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Sanya City.

In the 1970s, the market spontaneously emerged as an extensive market with agricultural products, handicrafts, and other commodities.

The market took shape in the middle and late 1970s. As the only farmers’ market in Sanya at that time, it was called Sanya Farmers’ Market. Many types of products including aquatic products, frozen foods, and non-staple foods could be found in Sanya Farmers’ Market.

In 1989, with the emergence of more markets, it was named Sanya First Farmers’ Market.

In the 1990s, the market became an extremely important trading place for agricultural and sideline products.

At the end of 2007, given Sanya’s program of building a national civilized city, the market underwent overall upgrades and a comprehensive renovation of its infrastructure.
