Overview of the Xinghai Square

The Aerial View

Xinghai Square has a superior geographical position. It is located in the southwest coastal area of Dalian, adjacent to Bohai Bay. Xinghai Square was an abandoned landfill at first. In memory of the return of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, later it was built into the largest city square in Asia and one of the landmark buildings of Dalian City.

Modeled on the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the center of the square is paved with 999 pieces of crimson red marble. The marble is inscribed with the heavenly stems (a Chinese ordering system), the 24 solar terms (a Chinese calendar of season division), and the 12 zodiac signs (signs of 12 animals). One who stands on his or her zodiac sign to take photos may have good luck.

The nine huge cauldrons around Xinghai Square are engraved with the words "The Chinese Nation Lives in Great Peace and Unity". The overall design implies "one word carries nine cauldrons" (means that words are weighty). At the center of the square, there also stands a large musical fountain. Every night, there are marvelous musical fountain shows. In the south of the central square, a "Century-old City Sculpture" is erected.

Xinghai Square covers a total area of 1.76 million square meters. Its perimeter is 2.5 kilometers, four times of Tian’anmen Square in Beijing. The inner diameter of the square is 199.9 meters. The outer diameter of the square is 239.9 meters, implying that Dalian will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2399. The square contains some scenic spots such as the Xinghai Square Musical Fountain.

In addition, there are also other famous and popular scenic spots close to Xinghai Square such as the Dalian Shell Museum, the Tiaoyue Bridge, the Xinghai Square Amusement Park in the southeast of the square, the Xinghai Square Bathing Beach and the Century-old City Sculpture in the south.

Among these popular scenic spots, the Dalian Shell Museum enjoys the largest exhibition in Asia and was designed by the Architectural Engineering Research and Design Institute of Tsinghua University. The Tiaoyue Bridge is about 135 meters in length and 9 meters in width. And the Century-old City Sculpture, located in the south of Xinghai Square, was built in 1999 to commemorate the centenary of Dalian. In the south of the sculpture, there is a square in the shape of an opened book facing the boundless sea, implying that Dalian will turn over a new page in a century.

The Musical Fountain

Xinghai Square Musical Fountain, covering an area of 20,000 square meters, is the largest musical fountain in northeast China. Between May 1st and mid-to-late October, there are two musical fountain shows every night and three shows on holiday nights. Each performance lasts about 15 minutes.

The spray of the fountain and the color of the lights alter with the rhythm of the songs. The themes of the shows are various. Compared with other fountains, the Xinghai Square Musical Fountain possesses an extraordinary feature: allowing the coexistence of fire and water. At the end of each performance, fire rises from the bottom of the fountain, impressive and breath-taking.

Story of Xinghai Square

The Seaside,Xinghai Square
The Seaside

Once upon a time, the Xinghai Bay (In Chinse, Xing means star, hai means sea) had no name. Two schools of fish lived here peacefully and harmoniously. But one day, a snake swam into the bay and wanted to occupy this beautiful paradise by force. The two schools of fish tried their best to drive it away, only to find that they could not beat it.

At last, gods of heaven saw this and dropped many star-shaped stones. The biggest one struck the snake to death. The biggest star-shaped stone then became part of the bay. That was how the name “Xinghai” came. And the square built later was called Xinghai Square.
