Day 2 Beijing
Tian’anmen Square, Forbidden City, Hutongs, Summer Palace

In the morning, you will visit Tian’anmen Square situated at the center of Beijing. Tian’anmen is the main gate of the imperial city of Beijing in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) Dynasties. The Square was an important place for grand ceremonies and significant activities held by the royal family in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Tian’anmen was opened on the following occasions in ancient China. Before the emperor went to war or a senior general went to war, an oath-taking session was held in Tian’anmen Square to stimulate people's will to fight. After the death of the former emperor, the new emperor would ascend the throne and declare the reason and date of accession to the throne to the whole country in Tian’anmen Square. Another occasion is that the emperor would make some significant announcements to the whole country in Tian’anmen Square, for example, the appointment of his empress. In addition to such occasions, the gates of Tian’anmen Square are closed.

Then you will pay a visit to the Forbidden City (Closed on Mondays) which was the imperial palace in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Covering about 720,000 square meters, the Forbidden City is divided into the outer court and inner court. The outer court includes the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, which were places for significant ceremonies. An inner court was a living place for the emperor and his family. However, the most attractive scenic area must be the Royal Jewelry Museum and Clock Museum in the Forbidden City. A volume of treasures offered by officers and other countries are stored in the Royal Jewelry Museum. Most of these treasures are made from precious materials, such as gold, silver, jadeite, jade, pearl, and gem. They were manufactured by skillful craftsmen nationwide. In other words, a piece of treasure cost amounts of money and time. Its workmanship represented the highest level of its time. These treasures extensively were involved in various fields like imperial ceremonies, religious sacrifice, daily life, and leisure, showing the supremacy and dignity of imperial power, and royal elegance. You have a chance to see the phoenix coronet worn by the empress. In the Clock Museum, you will see a variety of clocks. Before the Qing Dynasty, China used gnomon, sundial, and clepsydra to keep time. In the Qing Dynasty, the European mechanical clock was introduced to China which gradually replaced the traditional timer. Hence, you can see all kinds of delicate western clocks and some clocks manufactured by the Chinese which emulated the western clocks. Those Chinese clocks are decorated with traditional Chinese elements, such as birds, beasts, flowers, and so on, which made them more exquisite. At that time, it was not only a practical timepiece, but also a pleasing entertainment appliance, and a consummate handicraft.

After lunch, you will be driven to Hutongs by rickshaw. Hutong is a sort of alley that is not only a transportation road but also a place where old Beijingers live in Beijing. Every Hutong has had its name since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), but its name passes down by word of mouth. Every Hutong’s name has its reason. In ancient China, peddlers went from street to street hawking their goods. Gradually, some Hutongs gained theirs name from the products sold by vendors. There are numerous famous hutongs here. Taking Bada Hutong, for example, it was an embodiment of whorehouses in ancient Beijing, because there were many brothels nearby. In the Qing Dynasty, a lot of officials came here to enjoy themselves. Besides, there were many Houses of Ping Opera that were always gathered many pedicab drivers who came here to have a rest in ancient times. Now, you have an opportunity to experience the rickshaw tour. You will be driven to visit a quadrangle courtyard whose owner will tell you some stories about it.

Later, you will go to Summer Palace which was a royal garden in the Qing Dynasty. In 1750, Emperor Qianlong commanded to build Summer Palace for his mother with 224 tons of silver ingot. In Summer Palace, you will take a dragon boat to visit the beautiful scenery. There are many scenic spots, such as the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, the Hall of Jade Ripples, the Hall of Joyful Longevity, Seventeen-Arch Bridge, and so on. When it comes to the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, there is a story about it. In the ancient ritual system, the dragon represented the emperor while the phoenix symbolized the empress. The dragon often lied in the middle and the phoenix lied on either side. However, in front of the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity is that the phoenix stands in the middle while the dragon lies on either side, which reflects a historical fact in Chinese history that the empress dowager Cixi commanded the imperial power and the emperor who had no actual imperial power, became a puppet controlled by Cixi.

After the visit to Summer Palace, you will be sent to the hotel.
