Day 2 Beijing
Tian’anmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace

This morning, you will begin to explore Beijing by walking around Tian’anmen Square. Located in the center of Beijing, the square covers a total area of 440,000 square meters and can accommodate 1 million people for grand gatherings such as the National Day ceremony. The solemn flag-raising ceremony is held here every morning. Tens of thousands of visitors come to the square to watch the flag-raising ceremony every day. If you watch the whole process of the ceremony, you may find some details. First, soldiers in the national flag squad stand in four rows and nine lines, referring to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Second, the height of the flagpole is also designed particularly. It is 28.3 meters high. the number 28.3 represents a significant meaning. The Chinese Communist Party was founded on July 1, 1921, and the People’s Republic of China was set up on October 1, 1949. After calculating the difference between the two dates, you can find the time interval is just 28 years and 3 months. What an amazing design.

Then continue going north, you will come to the Forbidden City (closed each Monday), the imperial palace for the 24 emperors during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) dynasties. The Forbidden City covers an area of 720,000 square meters, which is equivalent to the area of one and a half Vatican. The Forbidden City was built by Emperor Zhu Di, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. And it took 14 years to complete it. What is the reason that he spent so many years building the Forbidden City? Does he aim to show his authority or enjoy a relaxing and luxurious life? Neither is the main reason. It is Zhu Di who moved the capital of the Ming Dynasty from Nanjing to Beijing. He planned to let his descendants settle down in Beijing forever. He was also worried his descendants would move back to the former capital Nanjing on impulse. Therefore, Zhu Di spent a lot of time and money building this sumptuous palace and making Beijing a metropolis. Beijing has been serving as capital from then on.

For the tourists in our China luxury tour, we will arrange Peking Roast Duck for you for your lunch. Peking Roast Duck has a history of more than 1000 years and it is a must-eat food when you come to Beijing.

After lunch, you will go to the Temple of Heaven. The Temple of Heaven was built in 1420. It was where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshiped heaven and prayed for good harvests. There are many sightseeing spots such as Circular Mound Altar, Changing Clothes Platform, and Sacrifice Pavilion. All of those were built for the sacrificial ceremony. The ritual of worshipping heaven is very complicated. The emperor began to fast three days in advance and wrote his speech on woodblocks two days before the ritual. One day before the ritual, livestock that was prepared to be sacrificial would be killed. On the very day, the emperor would kowtow to welcome the God of heaven. Second, he burned incense and then prayed to heaven. Third, he presented sacrificial vessels containing meat to heaven. Forth, he kowtowed to the God of heaven three times. Fifth, the sacrificial meat would be all burned down. At last, after all of these steps finishing, the emperor could go back to his palace. The grand and complex ritual is not only for praying but also for displaying the emperor’s power.

After visiting the Temple of Heaven, you will go to the Summer Palace. As an ancient imperial garden, the Summer Palace was built in 1750 by the emperor Qianlong. It covers an area of 2.9 square kilometers. There are so many landscapes in the palace that it is impossible to introduce all of them here. Thus, let’s just get to know a few of them. A renowned corridor here named Long Corridor has a total length of more than 700 meters. Besides its length, it is known for the paintings on the corridor. You can see more than 14,000 paintings themed with flowers, animals, Chinese legends, and so on. In addition, you can climb Longevity Hill – the best place to enjoy the scenery of the whole Summer Palace. Besides Longevity Hill, Kunming Lake is another famous sightseeing spot. Ming Tombs, Mutianyu Great Wall

This morning, we will drive northward for about 1 hour to the Ming Tombs, 50 kilometers away from the center of Beijing. 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty were buried here, so it is also known as “The Thirteen Ming Tombs”. Today we will mainly visit one of the Ming Tombs – the Ding Tomb. It is the tomb of Zhu Yijun, the 13th Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Two of his empresses are also buried here. When it comes to the Ding Tomb, we have to mention the golden crown unearthed in 1956 from its underground palace. It is made of golden threads. There are two dragons playing with a pearl decorated on the crown. According to experts, the head, body, claw, squama, and other parts of the dragon were all made separately. And then each part was welded and assembled. The whole process requires the craftsman to spend a lot of energy in welding each part and mastering the appropriate temperature when welding. It is because of the complex welding and other superb skills that the crown is thought to be pretty precious. In this China luxury tour, you will get a unique experience of visiting the underground palace of the Ding Tomb. With the explanation of your guide, you will know more about the Chinese royal tomb and ancient Chinese funeral culture.

Hutong. Take a train to Xi'an

This morning, we will go to visit the Hutong in Beijing. Hutong is the alleyway in Beijing, where the unique charm of old Beijing is preserved. There are thousands of Hutongs in Beijing, most of which have no names at all except some famous ones. For example, the Qianshi Hutong is only 0.7 meters wide on average and only 0.4 meters narrow at its narrowest part. Can you imagine how two people should pass if they meet in the narrowest part of this Hutong? Both of them need to be sideways so that they can pass. You may be worried that it’s too exhausting if we walk around in the Hutong. Do not worry! You will take a rickshaw to visit them. Taking a rickshaw is the most traditional and relaxing way to know about the old Beijing and Hutong culture. Besides, when you visit Hutong, you can also go into a Siheyuan, a traditional dwelling of local Beijingers, to see what the traditional Beijing-style courtyard is like. You can also chat with the host, listen to the stories that ever happened in this courtyard, as well as learn some authentic Beijing dialect. All in all, if you are interested in the culture of Beijing, you must not miss the Hutong.

Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum, Big Wild Goose Pagoda

This morning, we will begin to explore Xi’an by visiting the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum, which is hailed as the Eighth Wonder in the World. It is about 40 kilometers away northeast from Xi’an downtown. It takes about an hour to get there. In the past, as slave owners’ accessories, slaves were buried with their owners after owners’ death. Emperor Qin Shihuang, the first emperor in China, abolished the system of burial of the living. The terra cotta warriors and horses are life-sized funerary objects for him. More than 7,000 terra cotta soldiers and horses, bronze chariots, and a large number of bronze weapons have been excavated from the subordinate tomb. You may wonder why Emperor Qing Shihuang demanded to make so many terra cotta warriors and horses. As the creator of the first unified Chinese empire, he thought he must enjoy a luxurious life even after his death. Therefore, when he was 13 years old, he started to prepare to build a huge mausoleum that can show his glory and power. One day, a court official proposed to build terra cotta warriors and horses in the emperor’s mausoleum. He said that the life-sized warriors and horses could follow the emperor in the netherworld and help him build a new dynasty there. Hearing of this idea, the emperor was very satisfied. And the making of the terra cotta army began at that time.

After lunch, we will go to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It was built for Master Xuan Zang in 652 during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to preserve a large number of Buddhist scriptures and relics that he brought back from India. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is in the Daci’en Temple. There is a legend about the origin of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. There are two branches in Buddhism, one of which seldom considers eating meat a taboo. One day, some Buddhists who eat meat were starving but couldn’t find anything to eat. Upon seeing a group of big wild geese flying by, a monk said to himself, “Today we have no food. I hope the merciful Bodhisattva will give us some.” No sooner had he finished his words than the leading wild goose broke its wings and fell to the ground. All the monks were startled and realized that Bodhisattva was warning them to be more pious. Therefore, they buried the fallen goose, built a pagoda where the wild goose fell, and stopped eating meat. Later, they named the pagoda “Big Wild Goose Pagoda”.

At night, the Tang Dynasty Singing and Dancing Show with Dumplings Dinner is arranged for you. You could watch the singing and dancing show while eating dumplings. In northern China, dumplings, also named Jiaozi in Chinese, are one of the most popular staple foods. Different from the ancient times when people only had dumplings on important festivals, now they can eat whenever they want. Significantly, making dumplings is still an important activity for most families on the Eve of the Chinese New Year. Family members will gather together, making and eating dumplings while enjoying the Spring Festival Gala. In addition, it is a tradition in northern China to eat dumplings on the day of Winter Solstice. There are many kinds of fillings in dumplings. The most popular filling is pork and cabbage. Of course, if you are a vegetarian, you can also choose the dumplings with only vegetables inside. What are you waiting for? Join us to taste the delicious dumplings now.

In the Qing Dynasty, Manchu lived there with a strict hierarchy. That means civil and military officials lived in the wide alley, while soldiers lived in the narrow alley. That’s why it is named Kuan Zhai Alley - Kuan means wide and Zhai means narrow. The architecture here combines the architectural styles of Sichuan folk houses and Beijing quadrangle courtyard houses. In 2014, US President Barack Obama’s wife Michelle visited the Kuan Zhai Alley and dined at a hot pot restaurant.

The combination of their last names, Yin Wang, means "King of Hell" in Chinese. That is why it is called Ghose City. Gradually, more and more temples were built here. Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, Xiling Gorge

Today we will visit the three great gorges along the Yangtze River. The first one is the Qutang Gorge that is about 8 kilometers long. Although it is the shortest among the three gorges, it is the most majestic and precipitous. After going into the gorge, visitors can see nothing but threatening peaks on each side of the gorge. It seems that the peaks are cut by an ax and look very steep. In the gorge, you may find some cliffs as high as 1,500 meters. In addition, Qutang Gorge has a narrow river course that is no more than 100 meters wide. The narrowest section of it is only dozens of meters, making the two sides of the mountains close to each other and adding more magnificence to them.

Second, we will talk about the Wu Gorge, which is famous for its elegance. While drifting along the gorge, you will see twelve peaks on each side that are the most prominent sightseeing. Among the twelve, the Goddess Peak is the highest and most notable. There is a popular legend relating to it. According to an ancient story, the little daughter of the Queen Mother of Heaven once descended to earth to visit the East Sea. While passing by the Wu Gorge, she founds water in the gorge is overflowing due to heavy rain. The Goddess used her magical power to help people control the flood. After the flood subsides, she even prays for a bumper harvest and a safe voyage for the locals on the top of a mountain. Day by day, she became a part of the mountain so you can see the Goddess Peak is shaped like a beautiful lady. There are also many other attractions and interesting stories about the Wu Gorge.
