The history of the Great Wall is not recorded. In 1980, a stone tablet was found on the edge of the Great Wall in Inner Mongolia. The inscriptions on the stone tablet indicated the Great Wall had been built as early as 1396.

The Great Wall in Datong started from Ping Dingshan in Xinghe County in the east and ended at the east bank of the Yellow River in Qingshuihe County in the west, with a total length of about 350 kilometers. The walls were built of rammed earth.

In the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall in Datong began to be fully constructed. In order to strengthen the defenses to the north of Datong, two sections of the Great Wall were built in the 23rd year of Jiajing reign in the Ming Dynasty (1544). The two sections of the Great Wall were mainly located in today's Xinrong District and Zuoyun County.

When the construction of the two sections of the Great Wall was completed, the construction and repair of the main wall began. By the 25th year of Jiajing reign in the Ming Dynasty (1546), the boundary wall of Datong was completed.
