During the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), tea horse exchange gradually formed between Tibet and Lijiang, which means Tibetan exchanged grains, goats, and horses for tea with people in Lijiang. The activity later developed into the Ancient Tea Horse Road.

In 1382, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty commanded Aliang (the chief of Nashi people) to continue to administrate Lijiang and surrounding areas, awarding him the family name “Mu”.

During 1383-1500, the Mu Family constructed the Shuhe Ancient Town.

In 2003, a tourism development company of Lijiang invested large quantities of money to maintain the Shuhe Ancient Town.

In 2005, the Shuhe Ancient Town officially opened for tourism.

Sifang Street

Sifang Street was the distribution center of the leather trade in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with nearly 300 families working on leather production. At that time, the leather products made by these families were sold to Tibet, Xichang, even to foreign countries such as India and Nepal. As such, people of surrounding villages joked that people of Shuhe could go through the world with only an awl (a tool used for making leather shoes).
