St. Michael’s Cathedral

Qingdao St. Michael’s Cathedral, whose original name is St. Michael's Church(圣弥厄尔教堂), was designed by German designer Biloha based on Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles. Due to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Hitler banned the outflow of the German capital and the blueprint of the church had to be modified, causing the present construction scale of the cathedral. As a result, the planned height of the cathedral of about 100 meters failed to realize.

The St. Michael’s Cathedral was built in 1932 and completed in 1934. It covers an area of 11,480 square meters, of which the floor area is 6,301.54 square meters. The plan of the church is a cross in Latin character patterns.

There is a huge rose window above the gate, and across 4.5 meters in height stands on both sides of the gate respectively. The structure of the church is made of reinforced concrete and granite. The roof is covered with red tiles, which is imposing and classically elegant.

The decoration of the church is in the form of the Italian Renaissance. The spacious and bright hall inside the cathedral with seven large chandeliers hanging on the ceiling is 18 meters high. At the back of the hall, there is an altar. The dome above the altar is painted with exquisite murals, which are solemn and beautiful. Qingdao St. Michael’s Cathedral , as the largest Gothic architecture in Qingdao and a masterpiece of Catholic architecture, can accommodate hundreds of Catholics.
