The Front View

The grottoes were built in the later Qin Dynasty, which had a prosperous development in the Northern Wei Dynasty. After the continuous excavation and expansion in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it had become a famous group of grottoes in China.

In the Tang Dynasty, due to a strong earthquake, the middle part of the Maiji Mountain collapsed, and the cave group was divided into two parts: east and west cliffs.

The first conservation project of Maiji Mountain Grottoes began in 1976. To save the Maiji Mountain Grottoes, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage convened experts to propose a repair plan for the grottoes.

This plan is to use steel bars as a net on the cliff body, spraying 20cm to 30cm of cement mortar, and finally, make the surface layer old. In 1976, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage invested 3 million yuan to repair the grottoes.

The repair work was completed in 1984, and the engineering technology won the third prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. After the completion of the maintenance project, the west grottoes of Maiji Mountain were tightly nailed to the cliff. It has been 30 years since then.
