It is said that during the construction period of the concession in 1882, a stone tablet was excavated, which was engraved with many mysterious patterns. Not soon after that, a plague broke out and many people died. At that time, the Master Huigen happened to pass by Shanghai with five jade Buddha statues brought back from India. When he saw this situation, he said that the stone tablet was very ominous. So Master Huigen did a Buddhist ritual and buried the stone tablet underground again.
