Situated in the northeast of Zigong City, Sichuan Province, Zigong Dinosaur Museum is one of the national AAAA tourist attractions, enjoying the honorable title “the first professional dinosaur museum in China”. It is regarded as “the best dinosaur museum in the world” by National Geographic, which is well-known as the key area of Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark.
 

The Main Entrance

It was officially opened to visitors in 1987 and covers an area of more than 70,000 square meters. As one of the world’s three major museums of dinosaur sites, the museum collects fossil specimens from nearly all known dinosaur species 205-135 million years ago (the Jurassic period).
 

Upholding the concept of modern exhibitions, it has held a large number of dinosaur exhibitions at home and abroad. By virtue of advanced technologies, it can reproduce the scenes of the Dinosaur Age. In doing so, it provides basic information about different dinosaurs for visitors.
 

The museum boasts all kinds of permanent exhibitions. Among them, the Dinosaur World and the Dinosaur Burial Site give tourists deep impressions. Besides, the Multimedia Exhibition Hall and the Interesting Dinosaur Classroom help people know more about dinosaurs. History of Zigong Dinosaur Museum

In March 1972, a dinosaur caudal vertebra fossil was found in Dashanpu Town, Da’an District, Zigong City by a team from China Geological Survey.

In October 1977, an intact sauropod dinosaur fossil was discovered in Dashanpu Town.

By the end of 1986, the construction of Zigong Dinosaur Museum was completed.

In January 1987, it was opened to the public.

In 1991, it was listed as a cultural relic protection site of Sichuan Province.

In December 1991, it became one of the Forty Most Popular Tourist Sites in China.

In 2002, it was chosen as a National Science Education Base for Teenagers.

In 2008, it became a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The Dinosaur World

The Dinosaur World is the main exhibition hall in the museum. It displays 21 dinosaurs, all of which are unique in different sizes. The museum recreated their living environments according to their different physiological characteristics and habitat features. Here, dinosaur fossils are lifelike and make visitors feel like going back to the ancient dinosaur age.
 

The Dinosaur Fossils Treasure

The Dinosaur Fossils Treasure is an exhibition hall that presents the most precious dinosaur fossils in China. In order to protect dinosaur fossil specimens and give tourists a chance to observe them closely, these specimens are behind the glass wall. The hall contains the first-discovered tail hammer of sauropod dinosaurs and the best-preserved skull fossils of sauropod dinosaurs in the world.

Interesting Activity at Zigong Dinosaur Museum

Children love the interactive game, namely “running with dinosaurs”. The museum paves a running track beside a wall. The wall is equipped with a big screen. As children run, a dinosaur on the screen is also running together with them. Through this game, children are aware of how fast dinosaurs can run. This game provides joy and happiness for both kids and parents.
