Zigong Salt History Museum, one of the professional museums in China, is located in the center of Zigong City, Sichuan Province. It was built in 1959 based on Xiqin Guildhall(funded by the salt tradesmen from Shaanxi province, and used as a meeting place for salt merchants from Shaanxi) which was built in 1736.
Zigong Salt History Museum is the only one in China which tells the history of salt-making industry. With exquisite design and complex structure, the museum integrates the style of palace architecture and folk architecture, forming its own distinctive characteristics and personality. The museum owns a huge collection of historical relics of the Chinese salt industry such as books, models, photos, and tools.
The museum has been awarded the honor of “national popular science education base”, “Sichuan patriotism education base” and “Sichuan service standardization unit”. In 2017, it was officially rated as a “national first-class museum”.
Zigong Salt History Museum was built in 1959. Its site is housed in the Xiqin Guildhall.
In 1962, the museum launched the first exhibition of salt history.
Since the reform and opening up, the museum has embarked on the road of revitalization.
Since 1981, the museum has continuously improved and undergone three major adjustments.
On May 18, 2017, it was promoted to the third batch of national first-class museums.
The most famous exhibits of the Zigong Salt History Museum are tools of various kinds for salt making.
Among the tools and equipment for well salt production, there are more than 130 kinds of well salt drilling tools, about 400 pieces, from the reign of Emperor Qianlong(1736 to 1795) to the 1960s. These tools are of different shapes, and their weight and length vary greatly.
The drilling tools are ingenious in conception, exquisite in manufacture and various in shape, furthermore each has its own specific function. In 1835, the craftsmen of Zigong salt farm used these tools and created a miracle in the history of drilling in the world. They chiseled the world’s first over one-kilometer-depth well and made outstanding contributions to the treasury of human civilization.
The collection of tools is not only the symbol of the wisdom of the Chinese working people but also the carrier of ancient Chinese science and technology. It shows the unparalleled exquisite skills and level of ancient drilling technology in China.
The museum provides interpretation services.
