At the beginning of the 20th century, eight countries once established their concessions in Italian Street. Foreigners built many European-style buildings here for their offices and residences.

In 1902, Filete, lieutenant of the Italian Marine Corps, was appointed as the project manager, responsible for the planning and construction of the Italian concession. Since then, Italian-style buildings including Marco Polo Square were built one after another in the area. Until today, about 200 complete buildings were conserved.

Located on Italian Street, Marco Polo Square was once the central square of the former Italian concession. As Marco Polo was an important link between China and Italia, the square was named Marco Polo Square. The name has been retained today.

Built in 1908, Marco Polo Square covers an area of 2,200 square meters and takes eight years to become a unique and colorful Italian-style garden villa.

Marco Polo Square, as a pivot, is surrounded by many Italian-style buildings. Besides, there is a sculpture called the Goddess of Peace standing in the center of the square for commemorating the victory of World War I. It is 13.6 meters high and is of European classical style.
