Located at Dushan Alley, Binjiang Street, Heping District, the central commercial district and former French Concession of Tianjin City, China, St Joseph’s Cathedral Church is oriented northeast to southwest. Its full name is Xikai Catholic Church. Afterwards, it was renamed Xikai Church and Lao Xikai Church.

St Joseph’s Cathedral Church was built in 1916 under the jurisdiction of Paul-Marie Dumond, a French missionary. And its nave can accommodate 1,500 people.

The three giant domes have a “品”(pin) shape with a green copper surface on the outside, supported by a wood structure and topped with a bronze cross. As one of Tianjin’s protected historical relics, St Joseph’s Cathedral Church is the largest Roman Catholic Church in Tianjin.

History of St Joseph’s Cathedral Church

In August 1913, the construction first started.

In 1915, the French Catholic Church forced citizens to pay duty toward French Concession. Tianjin People were extremely indignant, and the people from all walks of life united and organized the National Land Maintenance Association to resist French aggression and expansion ambitions. As a result, the Old Xikai Incident occurred.

In 1916, Xikai Catholic Church was built up.

In 1976, the Tangshan earthquake caused the base of the domes of two front towers severely damaged.

In August 1980, the renovation of the church was finished and was opened to the public.

In August 1991, Xikai Catholic Church was listed on Tianjin’s cultural relics protection list.

In November 2018, Xikai Catholic Church was listed as the third batch of Chinese 20th century architectural heritage.
