It was established in memory of Wei Liaoweng, a minister and Neo-Confucianist of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). The establishment of the Wenjing Tower aimed to commemorate him, who made much more contributions to the development and prosperity of the education activity at that time. As a matter of fact, during his official life, he went through a difficult time. Afterward, he chose to give full play to the key role of education in Pujiang County. Doing much work at first, he achieved success and received a good reputation for his teaching methods locally, and even in the whole nation. Not only did he obtain much admiration and respect from students, but also what he did caught the attention of the emperor. Furthermore, during a civil service examination held in Chengdu which only admitted ten candidates, his students did a great job: one won the first place and eight of his students were selected.
