Introduction of Chunxi Road

Night Scene

Chunxi Road is the most representative and bustling commercial pedestrian street in Chengdu. It is located in the central region of Chengdu city.

The road was built in 1924 by warlord Yang Sen. At first, Chunxi Road in Chengdu has named “Senwei road” because of Yang Sen’s title of “Senwei general”. Later, it was renamed Chunxi Road due to one sentence in Laozi’s Tao Te Ching. The name of Chunxi Road is used to describe the scene of prosperous commerce and bustling crowd.

Chunxi Road was originally intended to be built into a straight road, but Zheng Shaofu, who is the owner of Fuji Pharmacy in Zongfu street and the interpreter of the French Consulate, refused this offer. Yang Sen had to compromise. Therefore, in Zhongshan Square, Chunxi East Road, Chunxi West Road, Chunxi South Road, and Chunxi North Road have distance with each other.

After the beginning of the Great Cultural Revolution, Chunxi Road became an “anti-imperialist road” on August 24, 1966. Because of its special status in Chengdu, it became the main place for Chengdu Red Guards to hold activities, and the name finally changed back to “Chunxi Road”.

When Chunxi Road became more and more famous, some people proposed that the century-old golden street should have its unique logo, namely a street sign. The sign of Chunxi Road came into being in the Zhongshan Square of Chunxi Road. Three alternatives were selected from more than 800 schemes, of which Design No. 1 became the spokesperson of Chunxi Road, reflecting both the history of Chunxi Road and the fashion sense of the modern city

The coin-shaped logo is full of commercial concept. It adopts calligraphy art and combines the two Chinese characters of “Chun Xi” into a whole. They are simplified into a square with the number 1924. The whole design is mainly red and yellow. The square hole in the logo represents ancient coins and is a symbol of wealth.

In 1924, Chunxi Road was named, and the four points under the logo symbolize the bustling crowd, implying that the pedestrian street was popular. On the back of the sign, there is an allusion to the origin of “Chunxi”. The whole design not only reflects the long commercial history of Chunxi Road but also reflects the characteristics of Chunxi Road as a well-known commercial street in China.

At the north entrance of Chunxi Road, the relief wall with Chengdu custom, made up of granite, depicts the eight major landscapes of Chengdu in the Tang Dynasty(618-907), namely, temple fair, flower fair, lantern fair, mulberry picking, hibiscus, brocade washing, brocade weaving, and wine-making.

If a visitor does not visit Chunxi Road when he comes to Chengdu, it is just as regrettable as not going to Wangfujing in Beijing or Nanjing Road in Shanghai. Chunxi Road is not only the fashion center of Chengdu but also the gathering place of delicious snacks.

When Zhang Wuguang, the founder of dragon wonton, and his friends discussed the business of opening a wonton restaurant in Nonghua Tea Garden, he borrowed the word “Nong” from the garden’s name and replace “Nong” with “Long”, as they have a similar pronunciation in Sichuan dialect, as part of the restaurant name. The Chinese Character “Long” implied the meaning of “a scene of hustle and bustle”, “auspicious” and “prosperity in business”. "Chaoshou" is a special name for wonton in Sichuan.
