Tsing Ma Bridge is the main passage that connects Tsing Yi Island in Kwai Tsing District and Ma Wan Island in Tsuen Wan District. It is also part of the Lantau Link in Hong Kong. Therefore, the bridge was named after these two islands, Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. The bridge is 2,160 meters in length. It is the world’s longest rail-road suspension bridge, with a main span of 1,377 meters, a width of 42 meters, and a height of 206 meters.
 

The bridge has two layers. The upper layer is a two-way six-lane urban expressway with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. While the lower layer is a two-track railway with a design speed of 135 kilometers per hour. The total investment of the project is up to 7.2 billion Hong Kong dollars. It is one of the winners of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century.

Tsing Ma Bridge is composed of the main bridge over the water, a north-south approach bridge, two tower columns, and overpass ramps. The main bridge section is designed from northeast to southwest.
 

The bridge is a double-layer steel suspension bridge for road and rail. The upper layer is a highway lane, and the lower layer consists of a dual-track railway and two carriageways, which can also be used as maintenance channels. If there is a strong wind or an emergency, the lower two lanes can be used for traffic diversions.

 

History of Tsing Ma Bridge

In 1978, a feasible plan for building the Tsing Ma bridge was worked out.

In 1992, the construction project of the bridge was determined.

In May 1992, a groundbreaking ceremony for the bridge was held. In June that year, the construction began.

In April 1997, the construction of the bridge was completed, and it was open to traffic in May that year.

If you want to have a close look at the bridge, you can take a taxi to experience how it feels like when going across the bridge since there is no sidewalk on it. Especially, when the night falls, the bridge looks more attractive when the lights are lit. If you want to take a look at the bridge from a distance, you can walk along Tsing Yi Nature Trails up to the top of the mountain to overlook it.
 

The Lantau Link Visitor Centre and Viewing Platform, situated at the northwest of Tsing Yi Island, is the best viewing place of the bridge. From the visitor center and viewing platform, you can look far down into the grand bridge. Besides, you may enjoy the bridge model and photos and play interactive games in the visitor center. From the other end of the platform, you can enjoy the sight of the Ting Kau Bridge, which connects Hong Kong Island and the New Territories.

 

Good to Know

The famous Hong Kong band Beyond created the music called Tsing Ma Bridge, which lures visitors into a peaceful and quiet world.

In the movie Shock WaveⅡrecently released in China, the scene at the end of the movie where the Tsing Ma Bridge is blown off is extremely visually stunning.

Many blockbusters, including The Iceman, have been shot around the Tsing Ma Bridge. The bridge has become popular creative material for movie shooting and musical composition.

By Bus

Take minibus 88M and get off at Sai Tso Wan Road Station.

Take minibus 308M and get off at Lantau Link Visitors Centre Station.

If you go to Tsing Ma Bridge from Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station, it takes 20 minutes (about HK$110).

If you go to Tsing Ma Bridge from Hong Kong International Airport, it takes 30 minutes (about HK$160).

If you go to Tsing Ma Bridge from Kowloon Hotel Hong Kong, it takes 30 minutes (about HK$120).
